Spirit Airlines will encounter new charges for carry-on bags from Sunday.
Spirit Airlines will encounter new charges for carry-on bags from Sunday.

The low-fare airline announced plans in April to charge for the carry-on items.

While passengers who pay in advance, either online or by phone, will have to pay over $30, those who don't bother will have to cough up $45 at the terminal gate.

Any bag small enough to fit under a seat flies for free.

Umbrellas, camera bags, strollers and car seats will remain free of charge.

Spirit Airlines, based in Florida has about 150 daily flights which carry leisure travellers.

Spirit is the first airline to charge passengers for carry-on items.
