A North Korean mine has exploded in a river in South Korea, killing one man and injuring another.
A 48-year-old man died and a 25-year-old man was seriously injured when the wooden box mine exploded as it drifted into a restricted border area in Yeoncheon, 60 kilometres north-east of Seoul.
South Korean soldiers have found more that 30 box mines an a concentrated search which began prior to this weekend's incident.
The Imjin River and all of its tributaries and inlets are being searched for the deadly North Korean weapons.
It is believed the mines have found their way into the area due to the heavy rains and water which has been released from North Korean dams.
Last year, North Korea suddenly discharged dam water, creating a flash flood and killing campers.

| UGH... what BS from these “nuts” who think the USA is the cause of this latest crap from NK.. |

USA must leave KoreaYes they are doing everything possible to start another conflict between the two Korea’s. The CIA are in the thick of things again I am sure. The people on the penninsula don’t want another conflict. Hundreds of thousands died in the conflict in 1950 with 58,000 american forces. We don’t want anymore casualties. So the best plan is to get the mischievious elements out of the country and is the USA. |

| I think the above commenters are a couple of absolute idiots. It’s Kim Il Yong that is the beast in disguise. I’m not fond of the US or their policies or their interference in other countries but you are real wing-nuts if you believe it’s the US’s doing. The Leadership of North Korea is as bad as they come - they let their people die of starvation while they guzzle the best wines, champagne, whiskey, brandy etc and munch on the finest foods money can buy. The rest of the money goes on grandious weaponry and keeping their armies fed well enough so that they will praise their “dear leader” and not desert. The rest of the population is starving, children are dying for lack of food and medical care. If not for the food and medical aid from South Korea and others, more would die. It has NOTHING to do with the US. |

You must be an idiot to believe whatever the media saidDrinking champagne, whiskey, brandy and muching finest foods? These are the same lie that the supremacists use all over the world to demonize other. Even the African American, chicano and aboriginal indian can’t escape such demonization at home. |

DUH Suppose the US discharged dam water also. You can lie some of the time but you cant hide irrefutable FACTS. Wonder whats next |

| People should have to take an IQ test to be able to post on here. There would be no ElEm talking about the US using secret ray guns, weather control machines,or foofoo dust to control the world.Maybe there should be a comedy section just for her. |

Man Dies After Land Mines Wash Up On Shore
Sunday August 01, 2010 - A man has been killed and another wounded after dozens of land mines washed up on the shores of South Korea, apparently swept down from North Korea by torrential rain.
]
The men found two wooden boxes containing land mines floating on a river near the North Korea border while they were fishing, a military official said. It is not clear if the pair knew the boxes contained the explosive devices but they picked up them up to take home. As they carried them away, one of the land mines exploded. A 48-year-old man was instantly killed and a 25-year-old man was seriously injured.
The explosion was reported shortly before midnight on Saturday in a restricted border area in Yeoncheon, 35 miles northeast of Seoul. South Korea’s defence ministry said dozens of boxes containing around 35 land mines have been retrieved along streams connected to the Imjin River since Saturday. It is unclear how the mines ended up drifting into the South but rising rapids triggered by recent heavy rain in the North could have been the cause, military officials said. It was unlikely North Korea intentionally released the land mines, the officials added.
Tensions between the two countries remain high after the South accused the North of torpedoing one of its warships on March 26. The two countries technically remain at war because their three-year conflict ended in in a ceasefire in 1953 without the signing of a peace treaty.

Peace in the world soon? Can you imagine the reaction if the Chinese were patroling the streets of North Korea and organising military manouvers? There would be panic in Washington. Some of these annonymous comments give themselves away by their style of writing messages. There will always be an ElEm and other progressive people writing on this site despite the smearining remarks. I will repeat we don’t want another conflict in the far east or any other area. Yes I blame the USA. How many countries has it meddles in since the end of WW2. How many innocent people have perished because of USA intervention in their respective countries. Why dont you answer these questions about the dangerous policies being pursued. We want peace in the world and an end to interference in other countries. You can only point a finger at the guilty and that is the USA. If I am wrong them please put the facts forward instead of smearing other peoples view point. |

The times have changedWe can probably take North Korea while only losing at most 300 men using B2 Spirits, Apache gunships, and our M1A2 Abrams can probably kill every North Korean tank without a single loss. |

Over throw your government and the west will help feed you!
Iraq has proven people can only free themselves!
Forcing freedom on a people not ready for it only invites disaster. |
